Why Nutrient Removal from Wastewater? 

Wastewater typically contains a large amount of nutrients - particularly phosphorus - that can pose a harmful threat to infrastructure and the environment, causing problems such as eutrophication in waterbodies and a buildup of struvite in mechanical systems.  To remove it from wastewater it must be converted to a solid form and then separated from the liquid. The conversion of soluble phosphorus to a solid form can be accomplished chemically, typically with an iron or aluminum based chemical, or biologically.

Evoqua has worked closely with wastewater plant operators and understands phosphorus removal challenges.  There are also advantages and disadvantages of chemical versus biological phosphorus removal.  Our innovative BioMag®​ and CoMag® ballasted clarification systems use magnetite - fully inert iron ore particles - to ballast biological floc or conventional chemical floc, enhancing settling rates and increasing the performance of wastewater and water treatment facilities, while substantially reducing costs The BioMag system uses magnetite – fully inert, iron ore particles – to enhance the existing activated sludge process. BioMag® systems provide up to 300% more treatment capacity in existing tankageWhile the CoMag system uses magnetite to enhance the clarification process, settling chemical floc up to 10 times faster than conventional clarification.  Both systems are fully automated, cost effective and, importantly, reliable. The technologies are easily integrated into existing tanks and can manage up to double the capacity of similar systems, They continuously recover most of the magnetite, which results in a more sustainable process and lower operational expenditure.
