Deionised water systems for labs: advantages & advancements

Deionised water plays an important role in many laboratory facilities and industries. However, supplying high-quality deionised water efficiently and reliably with consistent output can be challenging. In this blog we discuss deionisation, the benefits of centralised systems and the latest advances in Evoqua’s popular Protegra CS® series of centralised water purification systems.

Having a reliable source of high-quality, chemical-free deionised water is critical across numerous industries and research applications. From manufacturing to medical, the requirement for deionised water in various quantities and qualities necessitates the use of efficient and reliable water treatment systems.

Deionised water is a purer form of water with many of the common ions removed – frequently elements including calcium, sodium chloride, nitrate, bacteria, and germs. The most sustainable and simple way to achieve these high-quality water supplies is through reverse osmosis (RO). Reverse osmosis can remove above 98% of salt contents and more than 99% of bacteria and particles, resulting in extremely safe and pure water.

From chemistry, medical, and pharmaceutical laboratories to cooling and manufacturing applications, deionised water is crucial. For larger facilities and sites with the requirement for multiple outlets, a centralised solution provides many benefits.

Centralised systems offer multi-lab solution

For larger sites or multi-lab facilities, a centralised system offers substantial cost and efficiency advantages. With a single Protegra system providing deionised water, all designated end users within the facility can draw from a suitable source. Alongside the obvious water quality benefits, a centralised system also allows for smart management capabilities.

Using the Modbus® interface, all the data generated by Protegra systems can be transmitted to a building management system (BMS). This enables real-time monitoring and user notifications, allowing the individual responsible for water quality to operate with detailed oversight and act immediately, when required. One centralised Protegra system user, a hospital, fed its buildings (more specifically, the emergency department and operating room) with RO-water from Protegra systems for patient safety and peace of mind. Other notable customer examples include a glass wafer production site and pharmaceutical product factory.

The use of centralised deionisation results in numerous benefits for the business. Not only does it reduce costs by consolidating multiple systems into one, but it also reduces the space required and operational expenses associated with maintenance.

Advanced solutions

As a world leader in water treatment technologies, Evoqua has maintained its position at the forefront of laboratory and industrial reverse osmosis system design. The all-new Protegra CS® Pro RO EDI Systems build upon the success of the previous generation; designed to deliver high volumes of deionised water.

The new high-performance Ionpure™ CEDI cell technology significantly increases pure water quality while also being more energy efficient. With a hard-wearing and robust design, the new systems help to reduce operating costs with long service intervals and reduced annual maintenance requirements. The Protegra CS Pro RO EDI series offers consistent water quality of up to 0.055µS/cm at 25°C, for flow rates ranging up to 500 litres per hour and achieves a conductivity of less than 0.07µS/cm.

To make daily operation even simpler, a 7-inch touch panel display gives intuitive control. Monitoring via BMS is possible thanks to the Modbus® interface and data transfer via USB, and microSD enables data recording and straightforward firmware updates.

The new Protegra system is available in three models to suit customer applications, bringing modern and high-performance reverse osmosis to laboratory and industrial applications:

  • Protegra CS® Pro RO EDI 125 system
  • Protegra CS® Pro RO EDI 250 system
  • Protegra CS® Pro RO EDI 500 system
