Evoqua recommends granulated activated carbon (GAC) for treatment of PFOA and PFOS, which is also supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (see section entitled Steps to Limit Exposure, page 3). Our full line of GAC products are available in a wide range of mesh sizes and encompassing all carbon types.
One of the most cost-effective of these options for PFSAs comes from coconuts: Evoqua’s AquaCarb® CX enhanced coconut shell GAC. AquaCarb CX series carbon combines the benefits of an activated carbon with the high micropore structure of coconut shell, with faster kinetics comparable to bituminous coal. The result is an excellent capacity for difficult-to-adsorb organics such as PFOA, PFOS, and other PFSAs, as well as adsorptive performance for other background organics. Evoqua supports AquaCarb CX carbon and other GAC installations through a nation-wide network of facilities fully equipped to evaluate applications and build adsorption systems. Evoqua is also equipped to reactivate spent AquaCarb CX carbon, a process that actually improves the medium's filtration performance, and return it to the field.
In addition to GAC media and services, Evoqua provides treatment equipment, including treatment vessels specifically designed for these types of applications, which are available to purchase or rent. The vessels can operate over a wide range of pressures with capacities from 5 to 2,000 GPM.
