 Case Study: Vortisand® Systems Allow A Brewery To Expand Its Water Reuse Objectives, Meeting Today's Objectives & Tomorrow's

 The Project

A large American brewery approached Evoqua inquiring about the unique Cross-Flow Microsand Filtration Technology. The application required a reduction of TSS load in water that was being reclaimed from both processes and evaporator condensate. Designers had evaluated several other technologies, including traditional media filters and cartridge filters, but only Vortisand systems offered the unique combination of value, water quality, performance and small footprint.

 The Challenge

This project was unique in that there were two different inlet water flows, process water and the evaporator condensate. The filtration system needed to be capable of handling each stream independently or combined, which provided a unique challenge for Vortisand application engineers. Not to mention the differing TSS loads of the two streams posed a different challenge, requiring the Vortisand system to be flexible in its filtration capabilities. To better understand the task at hand, a laser particle count analysis was conducted. The test demonstrated that over 90% of the TSS load was larger than 30 micron in size.

 The Solution

Vortisand application engineers were able to design and manufacture a customized Vortisand water treatment system that delivered on all facets. The system was able to be activated as needed and was designed to have the capability to handle flows from 80 gpm up to 350 gpm. TSS levels were reduced by 98%, while meeting the customer’s footprint requirement, allowing for minimal construction costs.
