Odor Control Program Cost Reduction through Dosing and Monitoring Automation

​Hydrogen sulfide presents health risks and can deteriorate infrastructure in sewage collection systems.  Treatment with chemicals can reduce or prevent the formation of hydrogen sulfide. However, chemicals are often applied without monitoring or accounting for changing conditions within a collection system. This causes inconsistent treatment and increased treatment costs.

Evoqua performed a study on the effectiveness of an odor control program to control hydrogen sulfide while reducing program costs.

Henrico County, Virginia, has a long history of odor control challenges. The wastewater system serving the county includes a Water Reclamation Facility with a capacity to treat 76 million gallons per day, a conveyance system of approximately 1,460 miles of sewer pipeline, and 24 sewage-pumping stations.  The county was facing strict compliance limits and utilized multiple chemical technologies to control hydrogen sulfide. However, when costs reached in excess of $1.8 million dollars, a better solution was needed in order to manage program costs.

Evoqua provided a comprehensive odor control program with advanced VersaDose® Dosing Controllers at 14 dosing sites , cellular VaporLink® Hydrogen Sulfide Monitors at 11 compliance points, and the Link2Site® Web Monitoring and Control Solution.  VersaDose Dosing Controllers are designed to dose chemicals on a curve, rather than a fixed rate, to allow for changing conditions in the colllection system. VaporLink Hydrogen Sulfide Monitors report hydrogen sulfide data to the Link2Site website in real-time in order to evaluate performance and respond quickly to potential violations.

 After the odor control program at Henrico County was instituted, the county was able to save $439,000 in the next fiscal year, a savings of over 24%. The volume of total chemicals also decreased from 725,266 gallons to 550,979 gallons and the county was able to meet compliance limits without penalty.
