Type 1 (Ultrapure) Water

A typical ultrapure water or high purity lab water system has three stages: a pretreatment stage to produce purified water, a primary stage to further purify the water, and a polishing stage which is the most expensive part of the treatment process.

A number of organizations and groups develop and publish standards associated with the production of ultrapure water which have quantitative specifications that describe the level of purity for the water.  These specifications have been described by ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) D1193, ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 3696, and CLSI-CLRW (Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute-Clinical Laboratory Reagent Water). The most commonly used standards for Laboratories is ASTM D1193-6.
