 Challenge

​Smithburg, Maryland's Waste Water Treatment Plant faced major capacity issues. During wet winter weather, the plant suffered from settling issues and was unable to sustain MLSS concentrations at a level that would maintain nitrification. As a result, it was exceeding winter effluent ammonia limits.

 Solution

​The project engineer evaluated options and determined that the BioMag® System​ was the most cost-effective solution. The BioMag System uses particles of magnetite to increase the settling rate of biological floc, enabling treatment plants to operate at higher MLSS concentrations.


BioMag:

  • Enables higher biomass concentration while handling wet weather flow
  • Offers the only solution for temporary treatment via a mobile unit
  • Can be used in an existing SBR installation with existing tankage

 Results

A full-scale demonstration of BioMag produced MLSS concentrations nearly double previous levels. Following this demonstration, Smithburg WWTP installed a permanent BioMag System, which successfully maintained nitrification during the winter months and produced excellent quality effluent.
